What to expect from egg freezing for diminished ovarian reserve

Short answer

Expect hormone injections, repeated monitoring, an egg-collection procedure, and a conversation about the possibility of obtaining fewer eggs when ovarian reserve is diminished.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Core stages
Stimulation, monitoring, collection, and storage.
Key uncertainty
The number and maturity of eggs obtained can vary between people and cycles.

What the process involves

Medication encourages several follicles to develop during one menstrual cycle. Ultrasound scans and blood tests help the fertility team adjust treatment and choose the timing of the final maturation medicine. With diminished ovarian reserve, the ovaries may produce a smaller group of follicles, although individual responses vary.

Eggs are collected through the vagina using an ultrasound-guided needle, usually with sedation or anaesthesia. Mature eggs may be frozen using rapid cooling and stored for possible future treatment. Freezing eggs preserves them at that point in time; it does not guarantee a future pregnancy, and some eggs may not survive thawing or fertilisation.

Planning your cycle

Take injections exactly as taught and attend monitoring visits, because timing can change as follicles grow. Tell the clinic about medicines, medical conditions, and any symptoms between visits. Arrange time to rest after collection and follow restrictions on strenuous activity and sex. Ask how many eggs were mature, how they were stored, and what future steps would involve thawing and fertilisation.

When to get help

Contact the fertility clinic for severe or increasing abdominal pain, marked bloating, persistent vomiting, reduced urination, rapid weight change, heavy bleeding, fever, or shortness of breath. These can signal a complication of stimulation or collection and should be assessed promptly.

Questions for the fertility team

Ask how diminished reserve affects the treatment plan, how monitoring results guide medication, what maturity information you will receive, and how stored eggs could be used later.

Questions people ask

Does diminished ovarian reserve prevent egg freezing?

Not necessarily. A fertility specialist can assess your reserve, expected response, and whether egg freezing fits your goals.

Is egg freezing the same as freezing embryos?

No. Eggs are stored unfertilised; embryos are created with sperm before storage and involve different decisions.
