What to expect from an ECG for heart failure

The tracing can show heart rate and rhythm, conduction problems, or electrical patterns that suggest strain or a previous heart injury. It can also help clinicians identify rhythms that may worsen symptoms. An ECG supports, but does not by itself establish, a heart failure diagnosis.

You usually lie quietly while electrodes are placed on the chest and limbs. The recording is brief. The adhesive may feel slightly uncomfortable when removed, particularly if your skin is fragile.

Wear a top that can be moved aside easily and keep your skin free of creams where the electrodes will be placed. Bring a current medicine list and mention swelling, breathlessness, tiring easily, palpitations, or changes in your ability to lie flat.

Your clinician may combine the ECG with an echocardiogram, chest imaging, blood tests, and a review of blood pressure and medical history. Continue prescribed treatment unless your care team tells you otherwise.

Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue or grey lips, new confusion, or sudden weakness. If breathing becomes difficult when resting or you cannot speak comfortably, treat this as an emergency.

Ask what your rhythm and rate show, whether an echocardiogram or monitor is needed, how your symptoms fit the findings, and which changes should prompt same-day or emergency care.
