What to expect from an electrocardiogram for angina

An electrocardiogram records the heart's electrical activity through stickers connected to a machine. The clinician may ask you to remove clothing from the upper body, lie relaxed, and avoid talking or moving during the tracing. The recording can show rhythm problems, signs of strain, or changes that suggest reduced blood flow at that moment. A normal resting ECG does not exclude angina because symptoms and blood flow can change. Your history, examination, blood tests, and other heart tests may also guide the assessment.

Avoid applying oily cream to the electrode areas on the day if possible, and tell the clinician about chest symptoms, heart medicines, allergies to adhesive, or implanted devices. The stickers are removed after the tracing. Continue prescribed medicines unless the healthcare team gives different instructions. Note what brings discomfort on, how long it lasts, and what relieves it; this helps the clinician interpret the result and plan next steps.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain that is severe, new, persistent, or occurring at rest, especially with sweating, nausea, breathlessness, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Do not drive yourself. A scheduled ECG is not a substitute for urgent assessment during active concerning symptoms.

Ask whether your ECG is resting or exercise-based, what the tracing suggests, which further tests may be needed, and what action to take if chest discomfort returns.
