What to expect from cyst removal for a skin cyst

An epidermoid cyst is a sac beneath the skin that can contain keratin. If it is inflamed, the clinician may first settle the inflammation or drain its contents; removing the whole cyst wall is the step that reduces the chance of it filling again. The method depends on the cyst’s size, depth, location, and condition on the day.

Local anaesthetic numbs the area. You may feel pressure while the clinician makes an opening or removes the cyst and its capsule. The wound may be closed with stitches, left to heal under a dressing, or managed with another closure plan. The area can be sore, swollen, or bruised afterward.

Keep the dressing in place for the period advised and wash your hands before changing it. Clean the wound only as directed, avoid stretching or striking the area, and keep scheduled appointments for wound checks or stitch removal. Do not squeeze a remaining lump or apply unapproved products to the incision.

Some fluid or a small spot of blood may be expected early on. If the cyst was infected, complete any prescribed treatment and watch the skin as it settles. Protect a healed mark from strong sun according to your clinician’s advice.

Ask for prompt medical advice if bleeding does not stop with pressure, the wound edges separate, or pain and swelling intensify instead of easing. Spreading redness, pus, fever, or feeling unwell can indicate infection. A new lump or recurring drainage at the same site should be reviewed because cyst contents or the cyst wall may remain.
