What to expect from curettage and cautery for molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum causes contagious, smooth bumps that may have a central dimple. The clinician examines the bumps and considers age, location, number and skin sensitivity before recommending removal. Local anaesthetic or another comfort measure may be used. Curettage removes a selected bump, while cautery treats the surface and helps control bleeding. Not every bump must be treated in the same way, and new bumps can appear because the infection may spread through skin contact.

Keep treated areas covered as instructed and wash hands after touching them or changing dressings. Do not scratch, shave over or share towels, clothing or razors that contact the bumps. Avoid close skin-to-skin contact until your clinician says it is reasonable, particularly when treated areas are open. Keep the wound-care plan simple and avoid applying unapproved irritants. Children may need help not to pick at crusts.

Ask for medical advice if redness spreads beyond the treated spot, pain increases, swelling becomes pronounced, drainage develops or bleeding continues. Fever or feeling unwell should be reported. Seek review if bumps around the eyes affect vision, or if a lesion looks different from the others, becomes persistently inflamed or does not heal.
