What to expect from curettage and cautery for milia

Milia are small keratin-filled cysts close to the skin surface, commonly seen around the eyes and cheeks. A clinician confirms that a bump is milia before treating it. The skin may be numbed, then a fine opening allows the cyst contents to be lifted or scraped out. Cautery can treat the tiny surface and help control pinpoint bleeding. Eye-area skin needs particular care, so treatment should be performed by someone trained to work there.

Keep the spot clean and follow instructions about a dressing or ointment. Avoid squeezing, rubbing, scrubbing and strong skincare products until the surface has healed. Pause makeup around an open area as advised. Once healed, use sun protection recommended for your skin, because irritation can leave temporary colour change.
