What to expect from cubital tunnel release

Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve is irritated or compressed behind the inner elbow. During release, the surgeon opens the tight tunnel; in some cases the nerve is moved to a different position. The elbow may be dressed or supported afterward. Tingling in the ring and little fingers can take time to change, especially when the nerve has been under pressure for a long period. Incision tenderness and temporary stiffness are common parts of healing.

Keep the dressing clean and dry as instructed, and use the prescribed hand and elbow movements. Avoid leaning on the inner elbow and avoid heavy lifting until your surgical team clears it. Elevating the arm can help swelling. Keep follow-up appointments so the wound, nerve function and range of motion can be checked. Occupational or hand therapy may help restore comfortable grip and coordination.

Call the surgical team if the wound becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful, if drainage develops, or if fever occurs. Seek urgent assessment for a suddenly cold or pale hand, severe swelling, new loss of movement, or rapidly worsening numbness or weakness. A small change in sensation can occur during recovery, but a clear deterioration should not be ignored.

Ask whether the nerve will remain behind the elbow or be transposed, how to position the arm at night, when driving is reasonable, and which symptoms should improve first.
