What to expect from cryotherapy for keloid scars

A keloid is raised scar tissue that extends beyond the original injury. The clinician applies cold treatment to the scar, sometimes using a technique suited to its thickness. Expect cold, pressure, stinging, or aching during the appointment. Afterwards, the keloid may swell, blister, crust, feel tender, or become lighter or darker than nearby skin.

The aim may be to reduce thickness, firmness, itch, or discomfort rather than erase the scar. Keloids can grow again, so cryotherapy is often discussed as part of a longer treatment plan and may need repeated review.

Follow dressing instructions and keep the treated surface clean. Do not pull away a blister or crust. Avoid friction from jewellery, tight clothing, or straps over the area. Once the surface has closed, ask whether silicone care, pressure, injections, or another scar measure is appropriate for you. Protect the area from sun to reduce lasting colour contrast, and keep scheduled reviews so changes in thickness and symptoms can be assessed.

Report increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or spreading redness. Seek prompt care for fever, uncontrolled bleeding, or a wound that opens widely. Arrange a review if the keloid becomes rapidly larger, more painful, very itchy, or begins extending beyond the treated area.

Ask what improvement is realistic, whether the scar's thickness makes freezing suitable, how pigment may change in your skin tone, what combined treatments could lower regrowth, and how often the scar should be reviewed.
