What to expect from the combined pill for polycystic ovary syndrome

PCOS can involve infrequent periods, acne, and unwanted facial or body hair. The combined pill can provide regular withdrawal bleeding and reduce the effect of some hormones linked with these symptoms. Improvement in skin or hair may be gradual, and existing hair growth may need separate treatment.

The pill manages selected features of PCOS; it does not remove the underlying hormonal pattern. It also prevents pregnancy while taken correctly, but fertility can return after stopping. Your plan may need to include support for blood pressure, metabolic health, or pregnancy planning.

Take the pill at the same time each day when possible and use the missed-pill instructions supplied with your pack. Keep a symptom diary covering bleeding, acne, mood, headaches, and blood pressure readings if advised. Share your full medication history, including medicines for seizures or tuberculosis, because some can reduce contraceptive protection.

Attend follow-up to review bleeding control, side effects, and whether another PCOS treatment is needed. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing the reason with the clinician.

Get urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or a severe unusual headache. Contact a clinician promptly for very heavy bleeding, persistent high blood pressure, or a new mood change that feels unsafe.

Ask which PCOS symptoms the pill is targeting, when to review progress, and whether you need blood pressure or other health checks. Discuss pregnancy plans, alternatives if oestrogen is unsuitable, and how to manage acne or hair growth separately.
