What to expect from the combined pill for ovarian cysts

The combined pill contains oestrogen and progestogen and usually stops ovulation. That can reduce the chance of some functional cysts forming. An existing cyst may still need observation, an ultrasound, or another treatment depending on its size, appearance, symptoms, and whether it changes over time.

The pill may also make periods more predictable and reduce period pain. It is not a treatment for every type of cyst, and it does not remove a cyst that has already developed. A clinician may recommend follow-up imaging when the cyst needs monitoring.

Take each tablet according to the prescribed schedule and follow the instructions for missed pills. Keep a record of pelvic pain, bleeding changes, and other symptoms. Tell the prescriber about migraine with aura, previous blood clots, high blood pressure, smoking, liver disease, or medicines that may interact with contraception before starting.

Arrange the recommended review even if discomfort improves. The combined pill does not replace assessment of persistent or enlarging cyst-related symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe pelvic pain, pain with vomiting, fainting, marked weakness, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These symptoms can signal a complication such as cyst rupture or ovarian twisting and need prompt assessment.

Ask which type of cyst is being monitored, whether the pill is intended for contraception or prevention of new functional cysts, and when repeat imaging is needed. Also ask what to do after a missed pill and which symptoms should prompt same-day advice.
