What to expect from colposcopy for HPV infection

Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is common and many infections cause no symptoms. Some HPV types can cause cell changes on the cervix. Colposcopy does not look for the virus itself; it lets a clinician inspect the cervix more closely after screening has identified a result that needs review. A speculum keeps the vaginal walls apart while a colposcope stays outside the body. Solutions may highlight areas that look different.

If the clinician sees a place that needs clarification, they may take a small biopsy. You may notice a brief pinch, pressure or cramp. The examination can look reassuring, or it can identify changes that require monitoring or treatment. The HPV result and any biopsy result are interpreted together.

Tell the service if you are pregnant, have bleeding between periods, take medicines that affect clotting, or feel anxious about examinations. Ask about avoiding sex, tampons or vaginal products before the appointment. A pad can be useful afterward. Follow the clinic’s advice after a biopsy; light spotting or brown discharge can happen. Attend follow-up even if you feel well, because HPV-related cell changes often have no noticeable symptoms.

Contact the clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, chills or foul-smelling discharge after colposcopy. Seek emergency help if you faint, feel very weak or have severe pain. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether the HPV result sounded low or high concern.

Ask what prompted the referral, whether a biopsy is expected, how results will be delivered, what follow-up interval is planned, and what treatment options would be considered if cell changes are found.
