What to expect from colonoscopy for bowel polyps

A flexible camera allows the clinician to inspect the rectum and colon after the bowel has been emptied. Polyps can vary in size, shape, and appearance. Many can be removed during the same procedure using instruments passed through the camera; a larger or difficult-to-reach polyp may need a separate plan.

Removed tissue goes to a laboratory to identify its type and whether it has features that affect future monitoring. The finding of a polyp does not by itself establish cancer. Your follow-up interval depends on the number, size, type, removal completeness, bowel visibility, and personal or family history.

Follow the service’s instructions about low-fibre foods, clear fluids, bowel-cleansing medicine, and regular medicines. Tell the team about anticoagulants, diabetes medicines, allergies, and previous sedation problems. If sedation is planned, arrange someone to accompany you home and remain available according to the clinic’s instructions.

Mild gas or cramping can happen afterwards. Drink as advised, rest, and wait for the team’s guidance before driving or returning to activities that require concentration. Keep the results appointment so the pathology report and next examination plan are clear.

Call the endoscopy service promptly for increasing abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, or bleeding that is more than a small amount or continues. Seek emergency help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or sudden breathing difficulty.

Ask whether removal is expected during the examination, how blood-thinning medicines should be handled, when the tissue result will arrive, and what findings would change the timing of your next colonoscopy.
