What to expect from colonoscopy for bowel cancer

You follow instructions to clear stool from the bowel, usually using a prescribed preparation and temporary changes to food and medicines. At the appointment, the clinician inserts a flexible camera through the anus and examines the lining of the rectum and colon. Sedation or another comfort plan may be offered.

The clinician may take small tissue samples or remove a polyp during the examination. You may feel pressure, cramping, or bloating. A biopsy does not mean that cancer has been confirmed; the laboratory report is interpreted alongside scans, examination findings, and your clinical history.

Tell the endoscopy team about blood-thinning medicines, diabetes treatment, allergies, pregnancy possibility, and previous reactions to sedation. Follow the eating, drinking, and bowel-preparation instructions exactly as provided. Arrange an adult to take you home if sedation is used, and avoid driving until the team says it is safe.

Rest after the procedure, drink as advised, and expect mild bloating for a short time. Ask when results will be available and who will explain the next step if a biopsy or polyp was taken.

Contact the endoscopy service urgently for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, dizziness, or bleeding that is more than a small amount or does not settle. Seek emergency help for fainting, heavy bleeding, or severe breathing difficulty.

Ask why colonoscopy is recommended, whether biopsy or polyp removal may occur, how medicines should be managed, when pathology results are expected, and which further tests may be needed.
