Actinic cheilitis is sun-related damage affecting the lip, often with dryness, scaling, blurred lip borders, or persistent roughness. A specialist confirms the diagnosis and checks for areas that may need sampling or another treatment. CO2 laser resurfacing removes selected abnormal surface tissue and allows new epithelium to heal.

The treated lip can feel sore, swollen, tight, or raw at first. Crusting and weeping may occur before the surface settles. The appearance changes during healing, so early redness does not show the final result. Ongoing ultraviolet exposure can contribute to further damage.

Use only the cleansing, ointment, and pain-relief plan provided by the clinician. Keep the lip moist as instructed and avoid picking crusts. Choose soft, cool foods if chewing is uncomfortable, drink enough fluids, and avoid smoking or other irritants while the area heals.

Once permitted, use a lip product with broad-spectrum sun protection and a physical barrier such as a hat. Attend every review, because persistent roughness, a non-healing spot, or a new thickened area may need reassessment even after the treated surface looks better.

Contact the treating team for worsening swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, severe pain, bleeding that does not settle with gentle pressure, or difficulty drinking. A sore or thickened area that fails to heal should be reviewed rather than covered with cosmetic products.
