What to expect from a child health consultation for hand, foot and mouth disease

The consultation may cover fever, sore throat, reduced appetite, drooling, mouth ulcers, and spots or blisters on the hands, feet, or other areas. The clinician will look inside the mouth and examine the skin, while checking temperature, alertness, breathing, and hydration. Similar rashes can have different causes, so the overall pattern and examination matter more than one isolated mark.

Offer frequent small drinks and soft, cool foods that are easier to swallow. Follow professional advice on age-appropriate pain or fever relief, and never give medicines intended for another child. Encourage handwashing after toileting or nappy changes, avoid sharing cups and utensils, and clean frequently touched surfaces. Keep your child home from activities when they are unwell or unable to participate comfortably.

Arrange urgent medical help if your child cannot drink, has very little urine, has a dry mouth with no tears, becomes unusually sleepy, or develops breathing difficulty. Seek prompt advice for a persistent high fever, worsening pain, repeated vomiting, a rapidly spreading or unusual rash, or a child who seems markedly more unwell. Babies and children with long-term health conditions may need earlier review.
