What the result means

The radiographer may take front and side views while you remove items that obscure the chest. The image can show areas of inflammation or fluid, but it is interpreted with your temperature, breathing, examination, and symptoms. An early or unclear image may not settle the diagnosis, so the clinician may use other information or arrange further assessment.

What to do before and after

Tell the radiographer about possible pregnancy, severe breathlessness, or difficulty standing. Take medicines exactly as prescribed and ask what to do if you are waiting for the report. Rest, drink fluids if suitable for you, and monitor breathing and alertness. Keep the follow-up appointment so the result and next step are explained.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down. Obtain prompt medical review if fever or cough worsens, chest pain increases, or you become unusually drowsy or weak.
