What to expect from a chest X-ray for chronic cough

The image may help identify changes such as infection, fluid, or other visible lung and chest findings. It cannot explain every cause of a persistent cough, including some airway, reflux, or medication-related causes. Your clinician interprets it with the cough’s duration and pattern, smoking history, medicines, examination, and any other test results.

Tell the radiographer about possible pregnancy, difficulty standing, or pain that makes deep breathing hard. Bring a list of medicines and describe triggers, phlegm, wheezing, breathlessness, fever, or weight change to the requesting clinician. Continue prescribed treatment unless instructed otherwise, and ask how you will receive the result.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting, or coughing up a large amount of blood. Arrange prompt assessment for chest pain, high fever, worsening breathlessness, or a cough that is rapidly changing.
