What to expect from a chemical peel for sun-damaged skin

Photoaging describes changes from cumulative ultraviolet exposure, such as uneven tone, rough texture, fine lines, and some superficial brown marks. A chemical peel removes part of the outer skin layer in a controlled way, allowing newer skin to appear as healing progresses. The suitable depth depends on your skin type, the areas being treated, and the concern being targeted. A peel cannot erase deeper wrinkles or replace protection from further ultraviolet exposure.

During the consultation, mention recent sun exposure, tanning, cold sores, sensitive skin, allergies, and all prescription or non-prescription skincare. Follow instructions about pausing retinoids or exfoliating products. After treatment, cleanse gently, moisturise as directed, avoid picking flakes, and protect the treated skin from sunlight with clothing and the recommended sunscreen. Redness, stinging, dryness, tightness, and visible peeling can be part of recovery. Do not judge the final appearance while the skin is still inflamed; colour and texture settle progressively.

Call the clinic if pain is increasing, swelling is pronounced, blisters develop, redness spreads, or drainage appears. Urgent assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling suggesting an allergic reaction, severe eye symptoms, or accidental product contact with the eye. A changing, bleeding, crusted, or persistently different spot should also be examined rather than treated cosmetically without diagnosis.
