Short answer

Expect a consultation to identify the pigment pattern, a controlled peel application, temporary sensitivity, and careful sun protection while the treated skin recovers.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a peel addresses hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is excess or uneven colour and can follow acne, irritation, injury, medication, or hormonal and inflammatory changes. A peel can remove some superficial pigmented cells and encourage a more even appearance, but it cannot prevent the original trigger from returning. The clinician first considers whether pigment is mainly superficial or linked with ongoing inflammation.

The skin is cleansed, and the chosen solution is applied for a planned contact time. Tingling, warmth, tightness, or mild stinging may occur. Redness or temporary darkening can follow, with dryness or fine flaking during recovery. Deeper or persistent pigment may need a different approach or a combination plan.

What to do before and after

Share your history of eczema, cold sores, recent procedures, active breakouts, and all products used for pigment. The clinician may ask you to pause irritating exfoliants or retinoids. Arrive with clean skin and avoid applying fragrance or makeup to the treatment area unless instructed otherwise.

Use the recommended gentle cleanser and moisturiser after treatment. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, picking, hot treatments, and unapproved lightening products while the barrier is sensitive. Use broad-spectrum sun protection and limit direct exposure; ultraviolet and visible light can make pigment more noticeable. Resume active products only with clear guidance.

When to seek care

Ask the clinic for advice if pain is intense, swelling is substantial, blisters or raw skin develop, or redness continues to spread. Fever, pus, or rapidly increasing tenderness may signal infection and needs prompt medical assessment. If pigment becomes sharply darker or a rash persists, stop new products and arrange review before another treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what is driving the pigment, whether the treatment is suitable for your current skin condition, which home products to pause, how to protect against visible and ultraviolet light, and when progress should be reviewed.

Questions people ask

Can a peel remove every dark spot?

No. Results depend on the cause and depth of pigment, and ongoing triggers can cause colour to return.

Is temporary darkening after treatment possible?

Yes. The treated area may look darker or more irritated before it settles; report marked or worsening change to the clinic.
