What to Expect from Cervical Fusion for Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis describes age-related wear in the discs and joints of the neck. When symptoms persist or nerves or the spinal cord are compressed, cervical fusion may be considered after examination and imaging. The surgeon removes a disc or bone causing pressure, places a spacer or graft, and uses plates, screws or other implants to hold the segment steady while it heals.

The operation does not restore every worn level. It targets the level or levels linked to your symptoms and scan findings. Early neck soreness, stiffness and swallowing discomfort can happen. Follow-up examinations and imaging assess the incision, nerve function and progress toward fusion.

Tell the surgical team about medicines, smoking, diabetes, allergies and previous neck or shoulder problems. Arrange transport and help with household tasks. Ask whether you need a collar, and follow the hospital instructions about food, medicines and bathing.

Keep activity gentle at first: walk often in short periods, change position regularly, and avoid lifting, forceful neck movement and driving until cleared. Take prescribed pain relief as directed. Physiotherapy may later focus on posture, shoulder mobility and strength. Return to work and sport depends on the operation, your symptoms and the surgeon’s assessment of healing.

Report increasing pain, new arm or leg weakness, worsening numbness, loss of balance, fever, wound drainage, or swallowing difficulty that is worsening. Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, sudden paralysis, or new bladder or bowel problems.

Ask which symptoms are expected to improve, which neck levels will be fused, whether decompression is included, what restrictions apply to lifting and driving, and how the team will confirm healing. Clarify who to contact outside clinic hours.
