What to Expect from Breast Reconstruction for Breast Cancer

Reconstruction may happen during breast removal surgery or after other treatment. An implant uses a medical device to create volume. Tissue-based reconstruction uses skin and fat from another part of your body, sometimes with muscle. Some people choose a temporary expander before an implant. The choice depends on your anatomy, previous operations, planned radiotherapy, overall health and personal preferences. Reconstruction restores shape, but it does not remove the need for cancer treatment or follow-up.

Ask how many stages may be involved, where scars will be, and whether another body area will be affected. Arrange help with meals, lifting and transport while movement is limited. Follow wound, drain and pain-medicine instructions. Gentle walking is often encouraged when the surgical team agrees, while heavy lifting waits until healing progresses. Swelling, tightness, altered sensation and unevenness can change during recovery; the final appearance may take time to settle.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, wound separation, fever, sudden swelling, or pain that is not controlled. Seek urgent care for chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, or a painful swollen leg. A drain that stops working or fills rapidly also needs prompt advice.

Ask which reconstruction methods suit your treatment plan, how radiotherapy could affect the result, what sensation and scars to expect, and how long each recovery stage may take. Discuss symmetry, nipple reconstruction, alternatives to reconstruction and who will coordinate follow-up.
