What to expect from a bone density scan for osteoporosis

The scan commonly examines the hip and lower spine, where bone loss can affect fracture risk. A scanner passes over the body without entering it. The result is interpreted alongside your age, medical history, previous fractures, medicines, and other risk factors. A lower measurement can support an osteoporosis diagnosis, but the number is only one part of the assessment.

Wear comfortable clothing and remove metal items if requested. Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or take medicines that affect bone health. You usually remain awake and can return to ordinary activities after the appointment. Ask when and how your clinician will discuss the report, because the result may lead to monitoring, exercise and nutrition advice, fall prevention, or treatment.

A scan itself does not usually require urgent follow-up. Contact your care team promptly if you develop new severe back or hip pain, lose height after an injury, or cannot bear weight, as these can indicate a fracture needing assessment. Seek urgent help after a fall if a limb looks deformed, pain is intense, or you cannot move safely.

Ask which bones were measured, whether the result indicates osteoporosis or lower bone density, and how it changes your fracture risk. Clarify whether you need blood tests, treatment, strength and balance exercises, or a repeat scan, and which medicines or supplements should be reviewed.
