What to expect from a blood test for thalassaemia

A blood count can show the size and amount of red blood cells, while haemoglobin analysis looks at the different haemoglobin types. The pattern may support thalassaemia, thalassaemia trait, iron deficiency, or another blood condition. Iron deficiency can overlap with some findings, so the clinician may request iron studies and interpret the results together with family background and previous results. Genetic testing is sometimes considered when the blood pattern needs clarification.

Tell the clinician about family origins, relatives with thalassaemia or unexplained anaemia, pregnancy plans, medicines, supplements, and recent transfusions. Ask whether fasting is needed; many blood counts do not require it. Do not assume that small red cells mean iron deficiency or begin iron without advice, because the cause needs to be established.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, sudden marked weakness, confusion, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of whether thalassaemia testing is pending or a previous result was reassuring.

Ask which blood measurements were abnormal, whether iron studies or genetic testing are needed, and whether the result suggests disease or thalassaemia trait. If you are planning a pregnancy, ask when partner testing or genetic counselling would be useful.
