What to expect from bisphosphonate therapy for hip fracture

A hip fracture can signal that the bone needs more protection against another break. Bisphosphonates slow the breakdown of bone, giving the skeleton a chance to maintain or build useful strength. They do not repair the fracture itself or replace surgery, walking rehabilitation, and fall prevention. Your clinician may review calcium and vitamin D intake, kidney function, dental concerns, and other medicines before choosing a tablet or an infusion.

Follow the exact instructions for the chosen medicine. Some tablets must be taken with plain water on an empty stomach, followed by staying upright for a specified period; an infusion is given through a vein at a clinic. Keep attending physiotherapy and use your walking aid as advised. Do not stop or delay doses without discussing it with your prescriber, especially if swallowing pain, new dental treatment, or illness affects your plan.

Contact your care team promptly for trouble swallowing, chest or upper abdominal pain, severe muscle cramps, unusual weakness, or a new rash. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden worsening hip pain after a fall. A painful, loose, or poorly healing area in the jaw should also be assessed, particularly after dental work.
