A white patch can have several explanations, and its appearance alone cannot show the tissue changes beneath it. A dentist, oral surgeon or specialist may inspect the patch, feel nearby tissue and choose a representative area. The report may describe irritation, precancerous change or cancerous cells. It may also recommend monitoring or removal, depending on the findings and whether the sample answers the question.

Tell the team about tobacco or areca use, dental rubbing, allergies, bleeding problems and medicines that affect clotting. These details help with planning and healing.

Local anaesthetic makes the area numb while the clinician takes the sample; a stitch may be used. Do not chew until sensation returns, because a numb cheek or tongue is easier to bite. Choose soft, cool foods if the site feels tender, brush gently around it, and follow the instructions for rinsing and pain relief. Avoid smoking, vaping, areca products and alcohol while the wound heals, unless your clinician gives different advice.

Call the clinic if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, swelling is increasing, the wound opens, or pain becomes stronger rather than settling. Get urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if you feel faint.
