What should you expect from antiviral treatment for shingles?

Shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus in a nerve. An antiviral slows the virus as painful, grouped blisters develop, but it does not instantly remove the rash or reverse irritated nerves. Earlier treatment can help reduce the duration and intensity of the episode for some people.

Pain, tingling, itching, and sensitivity may continue during healing. Blisters usually need to dry and crust before the skin barrier is restored, so protect the area from friction.

Follow the prescribed schedule and complete the course unless your clinician changes it. Mention kidney disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, and all medicines or supplements. Wash hands after touching the rash, keep lesions covered with loose clothing when possible, and avoid close skin contact with people who have not had chickenpox or its vaccine, pregnant people, and newborns while blisters are open. Use only recommended pain relief.

Get urgent assessment for a rash near the eye or nose, eye pain, vision change, severe headache, confusion, weakness, facial drooping, or difficulty hearing. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, spreading redness, pus, severe pain, dehydration, or a weakened immune system. These features can require additional treatment or monitoring.

Ask when the antiviral should start, how to adjust it for kidney health, what pain plan is suitable, and when the rash is no longer contagious. Ask whether you need review for eye, ear, facial, or persistent nerve symptoms.
