Short answer

Expect an assessment of you and your baby, a planned course of steroid injections, and monitoring for infection, labour and fetal wellbeing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main purpose
Support fetal lung preparation when early birth is possible
Report promptly
Fever, foul-smelling fluid, contractions or reduced movement

Why steroids may be offered

Premature rupture of membranes means the amniotic sac has opened before labour begins. When this happens early in pregnancy, antenatal corticosteroids may be offered because they help prepare a developing baby’s lungs if birth occurs early. The maternity team will confirm the fluid loss, assess your temperature and other signs of infection, monitor the baby and discuss whether antibiotics, observation or other treatment is needed. The injection is given into a muscle, usually with a schedule set by your obstetric team.

Preparing and recovering

Tell the team about allergies, diabetes, medicines and any previous steroid reaction. Follow advice about hygiene, activity, intercourse and avoiding tampons while the membranes are ruptured. Notice your temperature, fluid colour and smell, contractions, pain and fetal movement, and report changes promptly. Keep the maternity unit’s urgent contact number available. Get urgent maternity help

Contact the maternity unit immediately for fever or chills, feeling suddenly unwell, foul-smelling or green fluid, fresh bleeding, increasing abdominal pain, regular contractions, or reduced fetal movement. Sudden breathlessness, facial swelling or a severe reaction after an injection also needs emergency help. Do not wait for the next planned dose if a warning sign appears.

Questions for your obstetric team

Ask how the injections will be timed, what side effects to expect, how blood sugar may be monitored if relevant, and how infection or labour would change the plan. Clarify when to return and what signs mean you should come straight to hospital.

Questions people ask

Does the injection stop labour?

No. It is intended to prepare the baby for possible early birth; your team will separately assess labour and infection.

What should I monitor after the injection?

Follow the unit’s instructions and report fever, fluid changes, pain, contractions, reduced movement or an allergic reaction.
