What to expect from an AMH test for diminished ovarian reserve

Anti-Müllerian hormone, or AMH, is released by developing ovarian follicles. The result is used as one part of an assessment of ovarian reserve, meaning the remaining pool of follicles. A lower result can be consistent with diminished ovarian reserve, but the number does not provide a simple yes-or-no answer about fertility. Age, menstrual pattern, medical history, ultrasound findings, and other hormone tests may change how the result is understood.

The test is taken from a vein in your arm. Ask the clinic whether you need to attend on a particular cycle day and tell them about hormonal contraception, fertility medicines, ovarian surgery, or treatments that may affect interpretation. Results are compared with the laboratory’s reference range and your clinical context. Keep the report and ask what it means for trying to conceive, fertility preservation, or assisted treatment; do not make a decision from AMH alone.

Arrange a fertility or gynaecology appointment if you have been told your ovarian reserve may be reduced, have irregular or absent periods, a history of ovarian surgery or chemotherapy, or are planning to delay pregnancy. Seek prompt care for sudden severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, or symptoms suggesting pregnancy complications; these are not explained by AMH and need separate assessment.

Ask why the test is being offered, whether medicines affect your sample, how your value compares with the laboratory range, and which additional tests are useful. Ask whether the result changes your timeline or options, and how it should be combined with an ultrasound and your personal goals.
