What to expect from ambulatory blood pressure monitoring for hypertension

At the fitting visit, the cuff is placed on your non-dominant upper arm and linked to a portable monitor worn at your waist or on a shoulder strap. It inflates automatically at set intervals while you are awake and asleep. The readings can show whether blood pressure stays raised outside the clinic, changes during sleep, or varies with activity. One uncomfortable or unusual reading does not define the result; the clinician reviews the series and checks whether the recording is complete. The monitor does not diagnose the cause of hypertension, but it can help guide the next clinical decision.

Keep the cuff arm still and relaxed when it begins to inflate, and record sleep, waking, exercise, symptoms, medicines, and stressful events in the supplied diary. Wear loose clothing and keep the equipment dry unless you are told otherwise. Continue usual medicines and activities unless your clinician gives different instructions. Do not remove the cuff or disconnect the monitor without advice. Return the equipment at the arranged time so the stored readings can be analysed.

The cuff may briefly feel tight, but severe arm pain, marked swelling, numbness, or colour change should be reported promptly. Seek emergency care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, fainting, or a sudden severe headache. Do not wait for the monitor report if these symptoms occur.
