What to expect from allergy testing for pet allergy

Pet allergy symptoms can follow contact with an animal or with allergen particles carried on clothing and furniture. Tell the clinician which animals are involved, whether symptoms start during visits or later, and whether you have nasal, eye, skin, or chest symptoms. Skin-prick testing places a small sample of a selected animal allergen on the skin. Blood testing checks for specific antibodies. A positive result means your immune system recognises the allergen; it does not establish that every episode is caused by that animal. The clinical history helps separate pet allergy from irritation, asthma, infection, or another allergen.

Record the animal, setting, timing, symptoms, and any treatment that helped. Bring medicine information and prior reports. Ask whether antihistamines need to be stopped before skin testing, and follow the clinician's exact instructions rather than changing treatment independently. Avoid arranging a deliberate exposure. Mention asthma, eczema, pregnancy, or a history of severe allergic reactions. A short-sleeved top can make an arm test easier.

Get emergency help for sudden breathing difficulty, throat swelling, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms after animal exposure or testing.
