What to expect from allergy testing for house dust mite allergy

The clinician may ask whether blocked or runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, cough, or wheeze is worse while sleeping, cleaning, or in dusty rooms. Skin-prick testing uses a small amount of house dust mite allergen on the skin and checks for a local response after observation. A blood test can measure antibodies directed at the allergen. A positive test indicates sensitisation, but symptoms and exposure still determine whether it explains your illness. Other indoor or outdoor allergens may be considered if the pattern does not match.

Write down where and when symptoms occur, whether they improve away from home, and any effects on sleep or exercise. Bring your medicine list and previous allergy results. Ask before stopping antihistamines, as they may interfere with skin testing; do not pause prescribed treatment without instructions. The test usually needs no special diet. Wear a short-sleeved top if skin testing is planned, and tell the clinician about asthma, pregnancy, skin conditions, or a past severe reaction.

Mild local itching at a skin test site can occur. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives after testing or exposure. Wheezing that does not settle with your prescribed reliever needs prompt medical attention, especially if speaking or walking becomes difficult.
