A hiatus hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves through the opening in the diaphragm. This can make reflux easier, especially after meals or when lying down. Acid-reducing treatment lowers the acidity of refluxed stomach contents, which may ease heartburn and protect irritated food-pipe tissue. It treats the acid exposure, not the physical position of the stomach.

Take the medicine at the prescribed time and do not increase, stop, or combine products without advice. Notice whether large meals, late eating, alcohol, or particular foods trigger symptoms. Eating smaller portions, staying upright after meals, and raising the head end of the bed may help some people. Tell a clinician if you need frequent non-prescription remedies or if symptoms break through treatment, because the plan may need review.

Seek urgent care for chest pain with sweating or breathlessness, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, or severe persistent pain.
