A report may describe a hernia, its location, and whether it changes with position or straining. It may also identify another explanation for a groin lump or discomfort, but ultrasound does not replace a hands-on examination.

A visible bulge can disappear when you lie down, so describe when it appears, what increases it, and whether you can gently push it back. Your clinician uses these details with the images to decide whether monitoring or surgical assessment is appropriate.

Usually, no special fasting is needed for a focused groin ultrasound, but follow the appointment instructions because protocols vary. Wear clothing that allows the groin to be examined and mention previous operations or mesh repairs.

Afterward, ask when the report will be available and what activity is sensible while you wait. Avoid repeatedly lifting something that clearly provokes pain, and arrange review if the lump grows or symptoms persist.

Seek urgent help if a groin lump becomes suddenly very painful, firm, discoloured, or cannot be pushed back, especially with vomiting, abdominal swelling, or inability to pass stool or gas. These features may signal trapped tissue.

Ask whether the scan shows a hernia, whether it contains bowel or other tissue, which activities to limit, and whether you need a surgical consultation or another test.
