What Is Urea Cream Used For?

Urea is a water-attracting ingredient that supports the outer skin layer. In a cream, it helps dry skin hold moisture and may loosen built-up scale. This makes it useful on cracked heels, rough elbows, thickened patches and some flaky skin conditions. The formula strength and the condition being treated affect how it feels and how often it is used.

A mild tingling can occur on irritated or fissured skin. Urea cream is not the same as a steroid cream, antibiotic or antifungal treatment, so it may moisturise a problem without treating an underlying infection or inflammation.

Apply a thin layer to clean, slightly damp skin as directed on the product or by a clinician. Concentrate on rough areas and wash your hands afterwards unless your hands are the area being treated. Avoid the eyes, lips and open wounds. Do not apply it immediately after shaving if the skin stings.

Choose a lower-strength product for routine dryness and seek advice before using a stronger preparation on a child, the face or a sensitive area. Combining it with gentle washing and regular moisturising usually makes the routine easier to maintain. Stop if burning, swelling or a worsening rash develops.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the skin is painful, bleeding, oozing, rapidly changing or not improving with a simple moisturising routine. Prompt care is appropriate for spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever, which can signal infection. A clinician can check whether thick scale is caused by eczema, psoriasis, a fungal infection or another condition.

Ask which urea strength suits the affected area, how often to apply it, and whether another treatment is needed for the cause of the dryness. Mention any cracked skin, allergies or products that have caused stinging before.
