What is the first treatment tried for small bowel cancer?

The small bowel includes the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, and the operation differs according to the tumour's position. Surgery may remove the tumour with a margin of bowel and nearby lymph nodes, then reconnect the bowel or create another route for waste if needed. The surgeon plans this after reviewing scans, biopsy information and your general health.

Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer medicines that circulate through the body. It may be considered before or after surgery, or when an operation cannot remove all visible disease. The cancer type, stage and pathology report help the team decide whether medicines are useful and which schedule fits your needs.

Ask where the tumour sits, whether it is blocking the bowel, and what the scans show about nearby organs or lymph nodes. Tell the team about vomiting, cramping, constipation, diarrhoea, bleeding, reduced appetite and weight change. Ask how eating, hydration, bowel function and recovery will be supported around treatment.

Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, heavy bleeding, fainting or signs of dehydration. These symptoms can signal a bowel blockage or another complication that needs prompt assessment.
