What is the first treatment for a pituitary tumour?

Pituitary tumours can affect hormone production, vision and the normal pituitary gland. MRI scans, hormone tests and visual-field checks help determine whether treatment is needed and which approach fits. Brain tumour surgery may remove a tumour through the nose and air spaces beneath the brain. Some small, slow-growing or hormone-producing tumours are monitored or managed medically, while radiotherapy can target tumour cells that remain or cannot be removed safely.

Ask for coordinated review by endocrinology, neurosurgery and ophthalmology when appropriate. Bring a list of symptoms and medicines, especially steroid or hormone treatments. Discuss the effect on vision, hormone replacement, recovery, nasal care and the schedule for follow-up MRI and blood tests.

Seek emergency help for sudden loss of vision, a severe new headache, vomiting with drowsiness, fainting, confusion or weakness. After treatment, report clear fluid draining from the nose, worsening headache, fever, heavy bleeding or marked thirst and urination.
