What is the first treatment for metastatic cancer?

Metastatic cancer has spread from its original site to another part of the body. Because cancers from different organs behave differently, doctors identify the primary cancer and review biopsy, imaging, blood tests, and sometimes molecular findings before recommending treatment. Chemotherapy is one systemic option because it can reach cancer cells in multiple areas. Other medicines or a clinical trial may be more suitable when the tumour has a targetable feature or when standard options have already been used. Palliative care can be introduced alongside treatment to address pain, breathlessness, appetite, sleep, mood, and practical concerns.
