What is the first treatment tried for Lynch syndrome?

Lynch syndrome is an inherited change that raises the chance of certain cancers, particularly in the bowel and womb. It is not treated like an established tumour. The early goal is to find precancerous growths or cancer at a stage when treatment can be more effective.

Colonoscopy allows the clinician to inspect the bowel and remove suitable polyps during the same procedure. The timing of surveillance is individualised according to the gene involved, family history, previous findings, and personal health. Genetic counselling explains what a result may mean for you and relatives.

Arrange care with a clinician familiar with inherited cancer risk. Bring any genetic reports and a three-generation family history if available, including bowel, womb, ovarian, stomach, urinary-tract, or other cancers. Ask which screening schedule applies to you and how results will be recorded.

If the diagnosis is not yet confirmed, genetic counselling can help decide whether a hereditary cancer panel test is appropriate. Do not assume that an unaffected relative has no inherited risk; testing and counselling are best planned together.

Seek prompt medical assessment for blood in the stool, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained iron-deficiency anaemia, ongoing abdominal pain, or unintentional weight loss. Report unusual vaginal bleeding or pelvic symptoms quickly, especially after menopause.
