What is the first treatment tried for inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak area in the groin wall. It may appear as a bulge that becomes clearer with coughing, standing or straining, and may settle when lying down. A GP examines the groin and asks about discomfort, activity and whether the bulge can be gently returned. If the diagnosis is uncertain, an Abdominal Ultrasound may be arranged. A small, comfortable hernia may be watched, while pain, enlargement or difficulty with daily activities can lead to a surgical opinion.
