What is the first treatment for hydrosalpinx?

A hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube blocked and stretched by fluid, often after inflammation, infection, surgery or endometriosis. Some people have no symptoms; others have pelvic discomfort or difficulty becoming pregnant. Imaging helps show the tube, but treatment decisions also depend on the other tube, ovarian reserve, previous operations and whether pregnancy is being attempted now.

Salpingectomy removes the affected tube. It does not remove the uterus or the ovary, but any operation has anaesthetic and surgical considerations. In selected cases, another procedure to block or drain the tube may be considered. These options require an individual surgical and fertility assessment.

Bring previous scan reports, infection history and fertility treatment records to the appointment. Ask whether the tube should be treated before attempting pregnancy or starting IVF, and how surgery could affect your fertility plan. IVF places the embryo directly into the uterus, so it can bypass blocked tubes, but the hydrosalpinx may still need attention first.

Seek prompt assessment for new or worsening pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, foul-smelling discharge or pain with a positive pregnancy test.
