Short answer

The first treatment tried for Hodgkin lymphoma is usually chemotherapy, with radiotherapy added for selected areas or situations after the disease has been assessed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common starting treatment
Chemotherapy is usually the first treatment approach.
Possible additions
Radiotherapy or later transplant treatment depends on response and disease pattern.

How the initial plan works

Hodgkin lymphoma is evaluated with tissue testing, scans, blood tests and a review of symptoms. Chemotherapy travels through the bloodstream, which makes it useful when lymphoma is present in more than one lymph-node area. The medicines and schedule are chosen according to the subtype, stage, symptoms, age and general health.

Radiotherapy may be directed at areas that need additional local treatment. The team checks response during the course so that later decisions reflect what the lymphoma is doing. If the disease returns or does not respond adequately, different medicines or an autologous stem cell transplant may be discussed.

Practical preparation

Before chemotherapy, ask which tests are needed, how appointments will be arranged, and what to do about fever or infection symptoms. Tell the team about medicines, previous illnesses and any pregnancy plans. Fertility preservation should be discussed before treatment if having children in the future matters to you, because some medicines can affect fertility.

Plan transport and support for treatment days, keep a record of symptoms, and ask about vaccines, food safety, activity and work. Request help early for nausea, tiredness, pain, sleep problems or emotional strain; supportive care can be adjusted throughout treatment.

When to seek urgent care

Contact the oncology team urgently for fever, chills, new shortness of breath, uncontrolled bleeding, severe diarrhoea, inability to keep fluids down, or sudden confusion. Emergency services are appropriate for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, chest pain or a serious allergic reaction during an infusion. Use the after-hours number supplied by your clinic.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which Hodgkin lymphoma subtype and stage you have, why the proposed chemotherapy was selected, how response will be checked, and whether radiotherapy is likely. Ask about fertility preservation, infection precautions, fertility-safe contraception, and what treatment would be considered if the lymphoma did not respond as hoped.

Questions people ask

Is radiotherapy always needed?

No. It is considered for selected areas and treatment situations after the team reviews the lymphoma’s extent and response.

When is a stem cell transplant considered?

An autologous stem cell transplant may be discussed when Hodgkin lymphoma returns or does not respond adequately to initial treatment.
