What is the first treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma?

Hodgkin lymphoma is evaluated with tissue testing, scans, blood tests and a review of symptoms. Chemotherapy travels through the bloodstream, which makes it useful when lymphoma is present in more than one lymph-node area. The medicines and schedule are chosen according to the subtype, stage, symptoms, age and general health.

Radiotherapy may be directed at areas that need additional local treatment. The team checks response during the course so that later decisions reflect what the lymphoma is doing. If the disease returns or does not respond adequately, different medicines or an autologous stem cell transplant may be discussed.

Before chemotherapy, ask which tests are needed, how appointments will be arranged, and what to do about fever or infection symptoms. Tell the team about medicines, previous illnesses and any pregnancy plans. Fertility preservation should be discussed before treatment if having children in the future matters to you, because some medicines can affect fertility.

Plan transport and support for treatment days, keep a record of symptoms, and ask about vaccines, food safety, activity and work. Request help early for nausea, tiredness, pain, sleep problems or emotional strain; supportive care can be adjusted throughout treatment.

Contact the oncology team urgently for fever, chills, new shortness of breath, uncontrolled bleeding, severe diarrhoea, inability to keep fluids down, or sudden confusion.
