What Is the First Treatment for a Ganglion Cyst?

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump that commonly forms near a wrist or another joint. Its size can change with activity, and it may be painless or cause aching, pressure, or difficulty moving the nearby joint. A clinician may examine its position and movement and use imaging when the diagnosis is uncertain.

If the cyst is comfortable and does not interfere with function, watching it and avoiding direct pressure may be enough. When it is painful or limits movement, joint aspiration can remove fluid with a needle. The lump can return because the connection with the joint or tendon sheath may remain.

Do not hit, crush, or puncture the lump yourself. Note whether its size changes, what activities trigger discomfort, and whether movement or grip is affected. A temporary reduction in the aggravating activity may ease pressure, while a clinician can advise on a splint or other support if appropriate.

If symptoms persist or the cyst repeatedly returns after aspiration, ganglion cyst removal may be discussed. The choice depends on its location, symptoms, examination findings, and your preferences.

Arrange an assessment for a new, growing, painful, or firm lump, especially if its location is unclear. Seek prompt care for redness, warmth, drainage, fever, sudden severe pain, weakness, numbness, or a hand or foot that becomes pale or cold.
