What is the first treatment for a skin cyst?

An epidermoid cyst is a sac beneath the skin that can contain keratin, a thick skin protein. A small, comfortable lump may not need immediate treatment. Tenderness, warmth, redness, swelling, or discharge can indicate inflammation or infection and may make treatment more urgent.

Drainage can relieve pressure when the cyst has become a collection of infected material, but it may leave the cyst lining behind.
