What is the first treatment for endometrial hyperplasia?

Endometrial hyperplasia means the womb lining has become thicker than expected. Progesterone counteracts oestrogen’s effect and can help the lining become thinner. The best option depends on whether atypical cells are present, how much bleeding you have, your future pregnancy plans and other health conditions.

An endometrial biopsy is used to examine lining cells and identify changes that need closer treatment. Follow-up sampling may be recommended to check how the lining responds. A hysterectomy may be discussed when atypical hyperplasia persists, returns, or when medication is not suitable, especially if pregnancy is not desired.

Ask a gynaecologist which type of hyperplasia was found and whether a biopsy has provided enough information. Discuss progesterone tablets or a hormonal coil, expected bleeding changes, contraception and follow-up appointments. Do not stop prescribed hormone treatment without speaking with the clinician who arranged it.

Arrange medical review for bleeding between periods, after sex, after menopause, or bleeding that becomes heavier or prolonged. Seek urgent care if bleeding causes faintness, severe weakness, chest discomfort or shortness of breath.
