What is the first treatment for drug rash?

A drug eruption is a skin reaction that may appear after starting, stopping, or changing a medicine. The timing, rash pattern, other medicines, and reason for treatment all matter. Do not stop a prescribed medicine abruptly without advice, particularly a medicine used for seizures, blood clot prevention, heart disease, or another serious condition. A clinician may use an oral antihistamine for itch and a topical corticosteroid for selected inflammatory areas.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist and provide the medicine name, dose, start date, recent changes, and photographs of the rash. Mention non-prescription products and supplements too. Until reviewed, avoid starting new skin products and use gentle, fragrance-free care. Keep a record of the suspected medicine and reaction so it can be considered in future prescribing.

Seek emergency care for swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness, widespread blistering, skin peeling, painful skin, mouth or eye sores, fever, or marked illness. These features can signal a severe reaction and should not be managed with home creams alone.
