What is the first treatment for Crohn's disease?

Crohn's disease can affect different parts of the digestive tract and can vary from mild symptoms to active inflammation. A GP or specialist reviews bowel changes, pain, weight change, fatigue, previous episodes, and medicines. Blood tests may look for anaemia or signs of inflammation, while further tests may be arranged when needed.

Treatment may involve medicine to calm active inflammation and then maintain control. The suitable choice depends on the affected area, symptom pattern, examination, test results, infection risk, and previous treatment. Food advice and support for nutrition may be part of the plan, especially when appetite or absorption is affected.

Arrange a GP consultation if ongoing diarrhoea, abdominal pain, blood in stool, tiredness, or unexplained weight loss needs assessment. Record bowel frequency, pain, temperature, food triggers, and any visible blood to discuss at the appointment. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, and recent antibiotics.

Take prescribed medicine as directed and do not stop it because symptoms improve without discussing the change.
