What is the first treatment tried for acanthosis nigricans?

Acanthosis nigricans causes darker, thicker, velvety skin, often in folds such as the neck, armpits, or groin. It can be associated with insulin resistance, weight changes, hormonal conditions, medicines, or other health problems. Treatment therefore starts with a medical assessment rather than trying to lighten the skin without understanding why it changed.

Once the contributing factor is addressed, the texture and colour may gradually improve, although the skin can take time to change. A clinician may add a topical retinoid or another procedure when appropriate. Chemical peels and laser toning are not automatically the first choice for every person or every cause.
