What is a suture anchor used for?

The anchor is placed in bone, and strong suture material attached to it is passed through the tissue being repaired. Tying or securing the suture brings the tissue back toward its intended attachment site. Anchors may be used through small arthroscopy portals or during an open operation, depending on the injury and surgical plan.

This method can help repair structures such as a shoulder labrum, rotator cuff tendon or a meniscus. The anchor is not a replacement for healing tissue: recovery still depends on protection, rehabilitation and the condition being treated.

Before surgery, ask what tissue will be repaired and how the anchor will be positioned. Afterward, protect the repair exactly as directed; a sling, brace or restricted weight-bearing may be needed. Attend rehabilitation appointments, keep the incision clean as instructed and avoid testing strength before clearance. Do not change pain medicines without checking with the clinical team.

Call the surgical team about increasing wound redness, spreading swelling, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or a new change in hand, foot or limb colour and sensation. Get urgent care for severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or an injury that causes sudden loss of function.
