What is surgical mesh used for?

Mesh is a flexible surgical material placed to provide support. In a sacrocolpopexy, it helps suspend the vagina or cervix toward the sacrum when pelvic organs have prolapsed. In a mid-urethral sling, a narrow strip supports the urethra to treat stress urinary leakage. These are different operations with different locations, goals, and possible risks. Mesh is not suitable for every person or every type of prolapse.

Ask exactly where the mesh will be placed, whether it will remain in the body, and what non-mesh treatments or repairs could address your symptoms. Discuss your medical history, future pregnancy plans, sexual function, and recovery restrictions. Make sure you understand how follow-up works and who to contact if symptoms change. Bring a medication list to the surgical consultation.

After an operation involving mesh, report persistent or worsening pelvic pain, new bleeding, unusual or foul-smelling discharge, pain during sex, recurrent bulging, urinary difficulty, or bowel problems. These symptoms can have several causes and need an examination rather than a diagnosis from symptoms alone. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever with deterioration, fainting, or inability to pass urine.
